Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em, the Atlanta ‘rapper’ that had everyone from 5 to 55 doing the Superman, has been called many things. In a recent article on with VH1, he was called the Greatest Performance Artist of our generation. No, I am not joking with y’all. The article goes on to say that maybe there’s more to Mr. Crank Dat than meets the eye.
Now, I’m no hater or anything. By all means, get your paper, Soulja Boy. If you want to run around making ignorant statements like this: “Oh, wait! Hold up! Shout-out to the slave masters!” Soulja replied “Without them, we’d still be in Africa. … We wouldn’t be here to get this ice and tattoos,” do what you do.
But, at some point, there has to be some growth. While I admit to having done the Superman with my 6 year old son on more than one occassion, I never even imagined that the song was written to make a joke out of the music that I have loved since childhood. The music that so many other artists take seriously and are passionate about. True, Soulja Boy gets props for doing it on his own via Myspace and You Tube, but that’s as far as it goes. His lack of talent alone is enough to turn the truest of hip-hop fan away feeling ill to their stomach.
Is Soulja Boy really the greatest performance artist of our generation?
