GLAAD organized the Brooklyn one hour sitdown, which also included Elke Kennedy, the mother of a 20-year-old man killed in a 2007 bias attack.
“My first reaction was he’s a very famous person and what is this going to do to the community?” Kennedy said. “I can’t believe someone would say that in a joking manner.”
Kennedy said she thought Morgan’s apologies were “sincere.”
“He realizes the things he said and what negative impact they had,” she said.
The organization handled the situation beautifully. Rather than attack Morgan for his views, they opted to teach the comedian the err of his thought process. Often people condemn and persecute before demonstrating the benefit of exploring alternative perspectives.
“We wanted to educate Tracy Morgan,” Siciliano said. “The ability to accept your gay kids is a matter of life and death.”
