MYCHAL BELL OF JENA 6 SHOOTS HIMSELF
Mychal Bell, one of the six Black teens in the Jena 6, shot himself in the chest Monday night around 7:40 in Monroe, Louisianna. He’s been living there with a foster family. The police say that his wound is not life-threatening and they believe he shot himself because he was upset over the media coverage of his arrest last week on shoplifting charges.
Bell’s arrest came less than one month after he finished a sentence for his role in the beating of a fellow classmate, Justin Barker, at Jena High School in 2006. He was sentenced to 18 months for his part in the crime and also served a sentence for three previous unnamed crimes. Another participant in the 2006 beating at Jena High School, Bryant Purvis, was also arrested this year after an altercation between him and another student he believed was vandalizing his car.
