Hazing is usually thought to occur within sororities and fraternites. Sadly the band leader at the Historically Black College/University was beaten fatally by the clarinet section of his band.
According to news accounts, the Marching 100 has a long history of hazing incidents and has been the subject of at least seven formal investigations into hazing in the past decade.
Mid November, FAMU police were alerted that a freshman from Jacksonville was in a Tallahassee hospital for injuries received in a Nov. 8 hazing incident.
Marcus Wayne Parker, 18, told police he was injured in a Marching 100 hazing ritual in which he was paddled. Parker spent five days in serious condition with acute renal failure, when kidneys fail to function properly, before he was released Friday. Parker went home to Jacksonville. He later succumbed as a result of his injuries.
Police arrested a 20-year-old former student and charged him with aggravated battery Friday. More arrests are expected.
The student’s mother is now on a mission to end hazing on all college campus’. The act is senseless and is causing serious harm to our future.
The longtime band director’s dismissal has been suspended until further notice.
