DOWN LOW BROTHERS: A SOCIAL EPIDEMIC
In 2004, author J. L King brought to light a social epidemic that had been going on for years without being said. They call it being on the ‘down low’, and I’m not talking about just regular cheating. ‘Down Low’ brothers are men that sleep with other men, but walk around like they’re straight. They live these double lives and think that everything is fine, that not being in a relationship with a man makes them heterosexual. They don’t see the effect it has on their wives, girlfriends, and kids.
Being on the ‘down low’ is not only unhealthy emotionally for the other person, but it can be physically harmful as well. Many times, these down low borthers are contracting HIV and AIDS from their partners and then bringin it home to their wives and girlfriends. Since they don’t have the stereotypical appearance of what society views as a homosexual man, the women in their lives are non the wiser to their secret lifestyles until they bring the disease home. Brothers living on the down low is one of the biggest contributing factors to the rise in AIDS amongst Black women.
The main question most women I know ask is why. Why is my man sleeping with other men? Is it me? The answer to that question is no. These men have probems, but not with the women. Their problems are internal and need to be handled through honesty and therapy. These men are so afraid that society will see them as weak if they come out of the closet. So, rather than be true to themselves and the rest of the world, they choose to hide. They hide behind their marriages and jobs and self-proclaimed heterosexualit
