Black Hiv Awareness Days serves as a day to raise awareness, money, fight prejudice and improve education for this disease that is one of the leading causes of death in the Black community. Most people don’t even know that they are carrying the disease because they don’t know their HIV status.
Since 1981, more than 25 million people have died of AIDS and young people account for half of all new HIV infections worldwide. Additionally, AIDS is the leading cause of death of blacks between the ages of 25–44. The best way to stop the spread of AIDS is to protect yourself when having sex and to get tested regularly. According to a recent study by the LANCET, if everyone was tested regularly, new HIV cases could be reduced by 95% in ten years.
When it comes to AIDS and HIV, what you don’t know can do more than hurt you, it can kill you. Please, go get tested today if you don’t already know your status. You can get tested at your doctor’s office, or any health clinic. The results take approximately a week to come back. I know that’s a long time to wait, but it’s better to know than not know.
