They say we are in a recession, and desperate times call for desperate measures. Well, we are definitly in those desperate times. The biggest problem that the US economy faces today is that we don’t make anything anymore. We closed the texile mills, forcing us to get clothes from China and electronic goods from Japan. However, America was sent into depression 80 years ago after the US made alcohol illegal. At that time our economy suffered. We did not come out of depression until they made alcohol legal again in 1933.
If there is anything Americans knows how to market, make and distribute, its marijuana. Marijuana has been marketed for years through movies, music, comedy and t-shirts. To look on the positive side of legalizing marijuana, the overcrowed prisons that can’t afford funding in many states could become a lot less crowded once the marijuanna delaers got released. So, wouldn’t it be better if we let out the marijuana smokers then the killers, thieves and rapists?
America has not had a cash drop in years where as sugar and rum trade gave the American’s it’s first economic boom. Then there was Tobacoo which gave it its second. The United States has a long history of making money of drugs. It is said that marijuana is the nations’s biggest cast crop, more than corn and soy, but marijuana is responsible for $36 billion annually in the USA and none of it is taxed. When we are paying farmers not to grow crops. Think about it if a farmer could grow marijuana they wouldn’t need anymore subsidies also be able to create badly needed jobs in the agricultural industries. If marijuana is legalized the farmers would be able to grow hemp which can be used to make clothing, fuel food and several other things. Making marijuana illegal does not stop people who want to smoke it from purchasing it. It only makes it more of a hassle.
Do you think legalizing marijuana would boost the economy? Comments?
