EZ Street posed the following questions in honor of Valentines Day and received a firestorm of responses! He asked:
(1) What don’t women want for Valentine’s Day? (2)What are good Valentines gifts to receive from your man? and finally (3) What are good gifts to give your man?
See what the people had to say, the answers will surprise you…
(1) What don’t women want for Valentine’s Day?
Overwhelmingly the general concensus was that flowers, stuffed animals, balloons, and the bucket of delights sold by corner vendors was NOT what women want for Valentine’s nor any other gift giving holiday for that matter. Cheap dinners, candy, cards, cleaning supplies (or any other household maintenance item) stank perfume, ill fitting clothing (including but not limited to lingerie) and anything stale, dead or regifted is also generally considered in poor taste and should not be given to anyone that you regard.
(2) What are good Valentine’s Day gifts to receive from your man?
The women who answered wanted everything from uninterrupted quality time with their men to a car wash and a full tank of gas. Sisters repeatedly stated that they wanted their men to be more romantic.
Many wanted bubble baths, back rubs, a candle lit atmosphere, a delightful meal either at a favorite restaurant or prepared by their significant other. A few sisters stated that they wanted the men in their lives to make an effort by preparing something from scratch. Whether it be a home cooked meal or some other form of thoughtful expression, women wanted him to show his heart by using his hands. Other women opted for babysitting services and/or car services while they enjoyed a day at the spa or just some down time. And then there were those who would be content with a bible study “date”, some wine and soft kisses. Whatever the preference the standard among the ladies was resoundingly clear. They all wanted their men to show their affection with minimal materialism. The latter may come as a surprise to some given the “gold digger” label that black women seem to have a very hard time shaking within the mainstream media.
Now of those who participated there were about five women who seemed to respond very favorably to receiving a $500.00 Victoria Secrets gift card, bills and loans paid off, and gift cards to DSW (shoe stores). But on the other hand, there were some other ladies who would rather have Ugg boots, a years supply of Black and Milds, tickets to urban music group performances and/or an authentic athletic jersey. Which for all intents and purposes, spoke more to the personalities and/or culture of the women than the context of yet another opportunity for corporations to capitalize on well wishing gift givers.
Having sex was not at the top of the ladies’ lists. Though not primary, IT did make the cut but was within low to mid consideration. Champagne, wine, sparkling cider (for non alcohol drinkers), and chocolate covered strawberries are a few personal favorites.
Keep in mind the women who responded were in their late twenties to mid thirties. Some variance given age, demographics, and values held- created the diaspora.
(3) What are good gifts to give to your man?
Predictably, men wanted their women to show up to their doorstep butt butter ball naked wearing only a trench coat and some high heels. There were a few that wanted to express themselves creatively, but they were overrun by the men who thought Valentine’s was only for girls.
In an instant the machismo circumvented honest, truthful, and organic human connection. It got in the way and seemed to disrupt the women’s call for their men to hear their hearts. The male desire to “hit it” attempted to shut the feminine up and off. A slight glimpse of what could be intrinsically be causing more and more singles.
