Muntadhar al-Zeidi, the Iraqi reporter that launched his shoes at President for now George Bush on sunday has become somewhat of a local hero in his native Iraq. Hundreds of Iraqis took to the streets in protest on Monday, demanding that the reporter be released from jail. The offense of throwing your shoes at someone is a high insult in Middle Eastern culture and is an offense punishable by two years in jail.
Although the act was intended to be an insult, many Iraqis found it inspiring. They feel that al-Zeidi spoke for all of their disgust for the person that they blame for bringing such unrest and death to their country. They see him as a hero and see no reason for him to be imprisoned. The government, however, sees his actions as not only disrespect to President Bush, but to the Iraqi government that they are trying to establish.
So, is al-Zeidi a hero or a criminal?
