Commentary: DMV awards 2011
A few fights will not keep this event from SHINING!
On Sunday March 6, 2011- EZ Street aired on 1450 am at 4:00p.m presenting a very informative discussion about the unfortunate events that unfolded at the DMV awards held the night before at the Hyatt in Crystal City, Virginia.
As a listener, the tone of the discussion was disturbing. Fighting at an awards show…seriously? Have we gotten to the point become a nation of losers? The black history and the future of this city is better than this display.
Interestingly in many elementary schools across the nation, awards are given to EVERYONE. That is not how life works. Life itself is a race to be won. Being unable to accept loss, means that the individual has many unresolved issues with the actual playing field. The one that expects to win all of the time is in store for a lifetime of rejection. Instead of using the loss as a motivator to improve or grind harder, the primitive display exposes just how fragile the fundamental skill development is within that individual. Even further telling is how the individual responds when his/her crew insight undue retaliation on the actual winner.
A few callers called into the talk show offering their minimal explanation on the events: “Things happen…”. As if moderately justifying the unseen behaviors because “we are from” this place or that…”we ain’t gonna be punked”… “ we gotta represent”-all traditional vindications. Honestly, all of that mess is tired. Grow up and stop acting like you live in the back woods. The very folks you are “representing” are the very ones who will watch you hauled off by the poe poe and not think anything about your being gone. A word to the wise: Keep on acting like heathens and the very neighborhood you are repping will be sold off in chunks to the highest bidder, just because folks like you are coming from there. Yeah the fools acting like dummies at events like this never thought about the larger picture…they never do. The immediate thrill of causing a scene is all that matters, which further signifies just how limited the individuals really are mentally and spiritually.
Emotionally challenged individuals will often demonstrate or manifest actions to make others feel what they are feeling. There are instances where children and adults suffering from this “disability” will actually smear their own feces on a wall or on any other object that represents that which is the perceived cause of their pain. This point is raised to illustrate the reasoning behind the destruction of anything positive established to honor what that individual is capable of creating. “I don’t deserve that” or “I should have gotten that…” will provoke episodes. If an emotionally challenged person is medicated and sipping on libations, it adds a whole other level of behavior manifestation.
The aforementioned is merely an attempt to rationalize, the disruption that occurred. It is a theorization of what could perhaps have taken place in the minds of the miscreants. Understanding the behavior is the first step in modifying the behavior.
Throughout the show the panel members suggested that there is a “disconnect” that lacks due to a need for “better parenting”. It was further stated that consciousness was needed and that we must have a social responsibility that is honed by a demand for improved morals, values and norms that we (the black community) have always instilled in our children, in one way or another. The points made were very accurate. However, the investment from parents MUST take place. Parents cannot let their children grow up like weeds and then expect them to be productive members of society.
Parents cannot parent their children because they are in fear for their lives. What does a community do to become collectively more socially responsible? Should we begin by boycotting all video games, music and other medium that cause human desensitization to the needs of others? Should we begin really putting our hands on our children to check on their well being regularly, instead of slapping them in front of the televisions and expecting everybody else in the world to raise YOUR child but you?
An artist is generally known for his or her ability to effectively and creatively express emotion. When artists become vigilantes –it is evidence that the world is in fact upside down. But we can’t even begin to have discussions about healing the world until we heal our very own communities. The brothers and sisters who found it necessary to seek the type of attention that continue to poison the drinking well-are among the few that will attempt to tear down that which has been built but if they only knew the hearts, minds and spirits of the builders they’d realize that it’s going to take more than a few “outbursts” to destroy what has been divinely constructed.
For the builders I tell you:
When the devil kicks up, you gotta kick in!
Use the events that took place as a learning lesson. Build bigger and better with the new information. Sometimes it takes a loss to be a better, stronger champion.
