Mar 05, 2012 TONI S COMMUNITY, SCHOOLED 1
Disney is at it again. Though finally providing the community with an African American princess in 2010, Walt Disney still seems to be missing the awareness necessary to sustain ‘our’ investment into their perceptions constantly perpetuated to children of color.
The issue is that during the 2012 Valentine’s Day season, Sleeping Beauty was used to market the Vanilla Dipping candy and TIANA (who was originally a maid named “Maddy” before marketing researchers advised against it) is used to sell the WATERMELON flavored candy. Are we being too sensitive or is this just a blatant effort to reinforce the historically stereotypical affinity that blacks allegedly have for the melon?
What other flavors could she have represented? Orange, and grape come to mind immediately but that’s a subjective opinion….
C’mon young! ‘DIG A LIL DEEPER’ and be more creative when pitching products to your highest growing consumer!!!
