WE WANT JUSTICE!!!! #MillionHoodieMarch demands arrest of Zimmerman and gains national support for Trayvon Martin……..
“My son did not deserve to die,” is what Trayvon’s father had to say about the senseless shooting death that has millions demanding justice. Tracy Martin is the father of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, the young black teenager who was walking home from a 7-Eleven in Sanford, Florida on Feb. 26 when he was shot by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman. Apparently Zimmerman felt threatened by Trayvon, he calle police and reported a “real suspicious guy” wearing a hoodie.
The 911 call that was released following the shooting contradict Zimmerman’s claims. Martin was found dead, unarmed, with a bag of Skittles and an iced tea. Zimmerman has not been charged in the shooting. He has said the teen attacked him and he shot him in self-defense.
On Wednesday night, demonstrators chanted “we want arrests” during the Million Hoodie March in Union Square in New York City. The teen’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, told the crowd, “This is not about a BLACK and WHITE thing, this is about a RIGHT and WRONG thing. My heart is in pain, but to see the support of all of you really makes a difference.”
The Department of Justice has opened a civil rights investigation and a local grand jury is set to meet next month to consider evidence in the case.
Police said Zimmerman is white; his family says he is Hispanic.
His parents appeared Wednesday on the “TODAY” show and said their child had been frightened for his life because he was being followed by Zimmerman.
“He was on his way home. He had every right to have on his hoodie. It was raining. Why not put on his hoodie to prevent getting wet?” Tracy Martin.
The case has ignited a furor against the police department of the Orlando suburb of 53,500 people, prompting rallies and a protest in Gov. Rick Scott’s office on Tuesday. The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division said it is sending its community relations service this week to Sanford to “address tension in the community.”
The march Wednesday was part of a social media event calling for Martin’s supporters nationwide to upload photos of themselves wearing hoodies and use the hashtag #millionhoodies.
“A black person in a hoodie isn’t automatically ‘suspicious,'” says the event’s Facebook page. “Let’s put an end to racial profiling!”
