Nicki Minaj definitely knows how to get the people talking. This time its the Roman Catholics, and they’re not singing hymns about this one….
Of the 39.9 million folk that tuned in, many were confused by Nicki Minaj’s Grammy red carpet arrival with a faux Pope and her exorcism inspired performance of Roman Holiday. In an interview with Ryan Seacrest, Nicki Minaj talks about her Grammy performance, outfit choice, and alter ego named Roman. She says “My fanbase, the Roman Empire and the Barbs, they understand everything I’m doing.” Listen to the Interview:
Meanwhile, the Roman Catholic community is not having it with Ms. Minaj. They said Oh No! That’s what you won’t do!!! Catholic League president Bill Donohue made comments on her performance at the Grammys saying, ” Nicki Minaj, fresh off looking like a fool with Madonna at the Superbowl, showed up on the red carpet at the Grammys with a guy dressed like the pope. It’s bad enough that Catholics have to fight for their rights vis-à-vis a hostile administration in Washington without also having to fend off attacks in the entertainment industry. The net effect, however, will only embolden Catholics, as well as their friends in other faith communities.”
The performance was definitely extreme, especially for someone looking through religious eyes. Choragraphed by the infamous Laurieann Gibson, at one point of the performance a female dancer stretched backwards while an altar boy knelt down in between her legs in prayer. I can only imagine the church mothers squinting their eyes and clinching their pearls. But at least the Barbs understand.
