HONOR THE DANCE
In honor of March Madness!
The regular uninformed bystander has no clue about the toils that a student athlete must endure to earn his/her collegiate degree. Nor are they apprised of the rigorous training, mental perseverance, player/coach politics and general team drama, required to compete in the sport that opened the door to opportunity and paved the golden trail to victory.
Cliché as it may be…literal blood, sweat and tears are shed for a chance for some to play on a professional level. However, for even more students, college sports provides a decent shot at surviving the game of life wearing a white collar and not blue or even worse- a t-shirt. Winning is not the only reason young adults dedicate their lives to honing the skills necessary to master a sport. Trophies and medals are the evidence of things hoped. However, the life skills that are developed on the journey of an athlete can never be measured. The discipline and character forged are rewarded intermittently along life’s way…well after the last horn has sound.
Student athletes are modern gladiators sacrificing social life and limbs to please the alumni, school administrators, the town that harbors the university or college they represent, the neighborhood and the kids that idolize them.
Salutations, congratulations and wishes of recovery are extended to those who went to the DANCE and to those who didn’t quite make it but fought well anyway. A gift, a pearl of wisdom from a veteran baller is also forwarded: never lose your tenacity nor the ability to “DIG DEEP” when things get rough, the latter will always separate you from the rest of the pack.
