Uh oh! Are those fighting words coming from Mayor Gray going straight at former Mayor Marion Barry???
The heat was turned all the way up in Ward 8 when words were exchanged between two of D.C’s most popular political figures. D.C.’s current Mayor Vincent Gray and former Mayor Marion Barry had some harsh words for each other at a townhall budget meeting Monday night.
Barry claims Gray was being disrespectful for holding the meeting the night before the election. Barry said there were many campaign workers who would have wanted to attend the meeting, but could not because they were working. Mayor Gray says the timing of the meeting was discussed with Barry’s office long before Monday night.
Barry let Gray know that someone was in his ear suggesting that he bring a mob over to Gray’s meeting to break it up.
“Someone said, ‘Why don’t we take 50 people down there and break up the meeting.’ You know I don’t act like that. I used to. I did break up a meeting in a minute,” Barry said.
Mayor Gray fired back when Barry finished his comments.
“I’m glad you didn’t come at me because I don’t do well with people trying to break up my meetings either,” said Gray. “I’ve been around this city all my life, and I don’t back up one inch to anything. And anybody that thinks I do can take a step to me, and I will step back.” In other words, I ain’t no sucker and I surely ain’t no punk!
Mayor Gray said he chose Ward 8 as the location of his first townhall meeting out of respect for the people who live there
