The teams representing the “Erea” (ER-EE-UH) in the 2011 NCAA tournament first round of play George Mason (VA), Hampton University (VA), Georgetown University (DC), University of Richmond (VA), Old Dominion (VA), and Virginia Commonwealth University (VA).
George Mason faced the giants of Ohio State.
George Mason worked extremely hard against the mammoth ballers but to no avail. At the half, the score was 52 Ohio and 26 George Mason. Ohio coaches actually adjusted their original line up to accurately match the GM. Ohio was able to rain three’s throughout the game. Invariably GMU played with tenacity but were unable to hang with the “big boys”.
Georgetown lost in their first round to a little known local program, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). VCU then played Purdue and VCU wore them out!!!!
VCU came out like a fireball and quaked Purdue to their core by exhausting the Big Ten team with pure GRIT! The commentators kept saying the VCU played “with a chip on their shoulder” , I say they played with a heart that was reminiscent of old school tourney displays. Just when this avid sportswoman thought that the true spirit of the game had all but evaporated thanks to the changed perspectives of a disenfranchised generation of entitled kids-VCU renewed hope. They played like they didn’t have a thing to lose. The black and gold rams were in excellent physical condition. Led by their thirty three year coach, Shaka Smart-these kids put on a truly inspiring show!
University of Richmond {SPIDERS!!!!} advanced to the third round after topping Morehead St. in the second round and Vanderbilt in the first round of play.
Hampton was defeated by Duke in the first round of play. Old Dominion was also beaten in the first round by Butler.
BALL BABIES!!!! WE ARE EXCEEDINGLY PROUD OF ALL OF YOUR HARD WORK!!!! REP WELL!!!
