Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a genetic bone disorder characterized by fragile bones that break easily. Someone with mild OI may experience a few fractures while those with the severe forms may have hundreds in a lifetime.
Compared to healthy bone, the bones of a child or adult with OI are like chalk.
Rolling over in bed or putting on a T-shirt can cause a fracture, and each broken bone hurts as much as the first!
Many people with OI have multiple surgeries to try to correct bone deformities and straighten bones so they can live independently. Recent research has developed new treatment options which have greatly improved the quality of life for members of the OI community. OI is a rare disorder, affecting between 25,000 and 50,000 children and adults in the U.S.
During Ms. Lavinia Jackson’s OI Benefit Ball, the community will gather to increase awareness and funding towards research programs and vital information and resources for our caregivers, doctors, nurses and teachers. All proceeds after expenses will benefit the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (Federal Tax ID # 23-7076021).
The event will be held in Greensboro, North Carolina on November 10, 2012.
