Mayor Adrain Fenty was born and raised in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood of Washington, DC. Fenty attended DC Public Schools and finshed high school at Mackin Catholic High School. His parents owned the Fleet Feet sporting goods shop in Adams-Morgan.
Fenty started his political career as an intern on Capital Hill and then he worked in the congressional offices of a number of Democratic politicians including Delegate Elenaor Holmes Norton. Fenty serverd as the President of the 16th Street Neighborhood Civic Association, Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner in ANC 4C, Legislative Director for the Ward 4 Democrats, and on the boards of the Lamond-Riggs Recreation Center, and the Friends of the Upshur Recreation Center.
In 2000, Fenty was elected to represent Ward 4 on the Council of the District of Columbia. Fenty gained a reputation as a champion for public services. In 2004 he was reelected, and in 2005 he announced his candidacy for mayor. During Fenty
second term on the City Council he served as Chairperson of the Committee on Human Services and he oversees the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services, the Child and Family Services Agency, the Department of Human Services, and the Office on Aging.
