In New Orleans, rapper Eminem emerged from a half-decade hiatus Friday night, bounding onstage at the Voodoo Art and Music Experience here to several thousand cheering fans.
Eminem has kept a reclusive, non-touring life the past several years, as he battled an addiction to prescription painkillers. Friday marked his first concert in five years and his only live performance of the year. There’s a history here: Eminem played the festival, known locally as Voodoo Fest, in 2000, just as his first album, The Slim Shady LP, was catapulting him to stardom, said Steve Rehage, a New Orleans native who founded Voodoo Fest in 1999. Friday’s crowd roared with approval as Eminem rekindled past hits, such as Business and Square Dance, in his signature rapid-fire rap. A full rock band accompanied him on stage, all members dressed in skeleton outfits. [youtube il7rvWq8QSw]
